Understanding free movement and migration in the European Union
Methodology for analysis of media practices
To understand the working practices of journalists around Europe, the REMINDER team interviewed 221 ‘media practitioners’. Most of these were working journalists reporting on migration issues, but a smaller share (29%) were ‘sources’ (often from NGOs, think tanks and government) who supplied media with migration stories. Interviews took place in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Slovenia and the UK, and were done in local languages. The interviewers asked a standardised set of questions, covering such matters as: different working practices of journalists around the EU; how migration is dealt with by the media in different EU contexts; relationships between media practices and the political contexts in which they occur; and the potential implications of different media practices for democratic decision-making in each country.
